    India’s Arctic Policy: Deterrent Against China’s Belt and Road Initiative?

    This study aims to analyse India’s Arctic policy, along with its historical background, and discusses whether it has a deterrent structure against Chinese policies in the Arctic. Typically, innovation programs are instrumental methods for countries to develop their economies. However, driven by apprehensions that China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) project may potentially impact the autonomy of other nations in the region, India has assumed a supporting role within the Arctic context in relation to China. In the international arena, it has become evident that other countries can be alternative allies against China’s foreign policies. In this study, employing qualitative research methods, an in-depth examination of the historical background of India’s Arctic policy has been conducted, encompassing a comprehensive literature review. Subsequently, using a comparative analysis method, these policies have been evaluated by juxtaposing various facets of the policies with analogous policies pursued by other nations. Finally, a comprehensive regional and international data analysis has been executed to assess the ramifications and potential outcomes of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) within the region. This approach has facilitated a nuanced comprehension of India’s role in the Arctic and the rationale underpinning India’s stance vis-à-vis the policies pursued by China

    An Empirical study on the competitiveness and innovation in four sectors of the Turkish manufacturing industry

    In this paper, we report on some of the results of the Innovations in Manufacturing Industries in Turkey Study (IMITS). This study is an empirical investigation into the innovation performance and competitive strategies of manufacturing firms in Turkey. The data was gathered in nine different cities in Turkey during the period August 2004 – January 2005. The survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews due to the complex nature of the survey and was implemented in 135 manufacturing firms operating in four sectors: Textiles, chemicals, food processing, and metal. The study has been an extension of the European Manufacturing Survey 2004 (EMS 2004) coordinated by the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research and covering nine countries: Germany, Turkey, Austria, Switzerland, France, Slovenia, Croatia, Italy, and United Kingdom. Some of the basic results concerning competitive priorities, modernization of manufacturing, new product development, and quality management are presented

    Organizational support for intrapreneurship and its interaction with human capital to enhance innovative performance

    This study explores the impacts of the internal supportive environment for intrapreneurial activities on firms’ innovative performance and the moderating role of human capital in this relationship by making use of a questionnaire study covering 184 manufacturing firms in Turkey. As for the individual direct effects of the dimensions of Organizational Support (OS), Management Support for Idea Generation and Tolerance for Risk Taking are found to exert positive effects on innovative performance. Availability of a Performance Based Reward System and Free Time have no impact on innovativeness, while Work Discretion has a negative one. As for the role of Human Capital (HC), it is found to be an important driver of innovative performance especially when the OS is limited. However, when the levels of both HC and OS are high, innovative performance does not further increase, probably reaching a temporary performance ceiling. Managerial and further research implications are provided

    Location recommendations for new businesses using check-in data

    Location based social networks (LBSN) and mobile applications generate data useful for location oriented business decisions. Companies can get insights about mobility patterns of potential customers and their daily habits on shopping, dining, etc. to enhance customer satisfaction and increase profitability. We introduce a new problem of identifying neighborhoods with a potential of success in a line of business. After partitioning the city into neighborhoods, based on geographical and social distances, we use the similarities of the neighborhoods to identify specific neighborhoods as candidates for investment for a new business opportunity. We present two solutions for this new problem: i) a probabilistic approach based on Bayesian inference for location selection along with a voting based approximation, and ii) an adaptation of collaborative filtering using the similarity of neighborhoods based on co-existence of related venues and check-in patterns. We use Foursquare user check-in and venue location data to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach. Our experiments show promising results for identifying new opportunities and supporting business decisions using increasingly available check-in data sets
